tpweather wrote: Tue Jan 16, 2024 7:16 am Looks like a couple of systems through next Monday and the send off to a milder period is a frz/rain event. Then we get mild and rather wet for about 10-14 days as the pattern lets up here and the next area of colder air is developing. The good thing is the cold though retreating from much of the USA is not heading back to the other side of the world. This tells me another blast of winter is on its way and we just need to figure out what part of the country will get hit the hardest. This past cold spell was further west than I thought so hopefully its centered further east. Will need to put up on my weather station on Wednesday and will be ready for some fun an games
My current thoughts (subject to change) is a milder pattern beginning next Monday the 22nd lasting until the 30th. I agree with you that we do need to watch how quickly the return flow sets up for any frz rain or mixed precip before we fully thaw out. Always a risk for sure and something that we will certainly be watching next week. The rain won't be so bad as everything will need a nice rinse job by then with so much salt on the roads right now.

It looks like the further north you were the better with this little minor wave passing thru. We have a nice covering here in Mason as it is finally getting light out enough for me to see.

18 for the high, 7 for the low officially at CVG today. 18 also for my high. After the potential snow event this Thurs and Fri... we are still in the deep freeze this weekend but above freezing air returns next week. We may get close to 40 on Monday of next week with the 50s returning not long after that. Typically when you come out of a deep freeze like this, the Gulf usually opens for business. We'll keep an eye on any frz rain or mixing concerns early on, but otherwise plain old rain and quite a bit of it, looks possible at times next week. The timing will become more clearer as well as amounts, as we get closer.

The GFS is showing heavy rain possible next week and it could come as waves of low pressure dragging moisture from the gulf. It should be interesting to see how the models pan out in the coming days.

I'm waiting for the ECMWF to finish publishing the 00z model run. Concerning snowfall on Friday/Saturday, the GFS seems more robust. Right now, Cincinnati is ranked in the top 5 least snowiest winters. I want some snow. lol

CVG is down to 5 degrees now as of 7am. 4 I believe is the coldest morning we have had so far in 2024.

This cold snap has been impressive. The lack of snow though has kept the cold in check. Highs below 10 and lows below zero would have easily occurred had we had a few inches of snow on the ground.

MJO running the show for the most part. The cold lined up well with phases with the lag. And now lining up well with the forecasted warmup as the MJO marches through 4-5-6 and proper lag. As long as it keep its eastward progression into the colder phases , no reason to think we won’t have another cold spell

I am expecting it to keep moving so my thought process for a while has been for the pattern to re-load end of this month into early Feb. Some Pro Mets are speculating that we wait until Week 2 or 3 in Feb then we get cold. I am not seeing the -NAO returning yet on the Ensembles, but I am seeing a +PNA / -EPO combo coming late this month and into Feb so if correct, we shall see what we can do with that Teleconnection.
