Re: January 2025 Wx Discussion
These snow showers mean business if they hold together. Snow covered roads and accidents in Indiana from these.

Re: January 2025 Wx Discussion
Seeing some flurries here late this afternoon. Had a nice snow shower on the drive home today. Lasted about a mile or two down I-71 and snow was starting to stick to the road then it was over. CVG recorded a T of snow today. Still a 1" snow depth. We should keep it tomorrow then lose it over the weekend.

One thing's for sure, the next storm keeps getting pushed back. It'll probably be in February the way it's looking to me, around GHD.

Radar's looking decent folks to the NW. Batch of snow showers dropping SE with the front. Isolated locations could see up to 1/2".

ATM, cvg sits at a very respectable 7th for January snow totals. Dayton and Cbus totals and rankings

Re: January 2025 Wx Discussion
That's awesome! Both temps and snowfall along with snow cover has been very satisfying! I'd love to see a couple more snows to get us above avg on the season then bring on spring. Plenty of time for us to do it too. We still have a good 6 weeks of prime climo left before snow chances begin to drop off (climo wise).

Re: January 2025 Wx Discussion
I checked CVG's status and it has snowed 12 out of 24 days in January with at least a trace or more of snow recorded. It has snowed up to this point, 50% of the time this month. Wow, too bad this pattern is ending.

NOAA Fairbanks
Historic Winter Rain
Extraordinary and historic winter rain has been occurring today across a large swath of interior Alaska extending all the way up to the Yukon Flats and the southern edge of the Brooks Range.
In data extending back to 1948 , Fort Yukon has only reported plain rain (i.e. with a temperature above freezing) in November through February on two occasions, and that briefly: a single report of light rain and 33°F on January 22, 1962, and a report of light rain with 35°F on Christmas Eve, 1985. But today it rained from 4:15am through 10:30am, and then it began again at 3pm; it's still ongoing as of 6pm, and the temperature has been as high as 39°F.
Rain has also been reported in Bettles, Fairbanks, Tanana, and of course points to the southwest, where the moisture is coming from.

Re: January 2025 Wx Discussion
It's been a Top 5 warmest and least snowiest winter at Anchorage too. You know the ole saying, when Alaska is warm we are cold. This winter could not be more right with that.Bgoney wrote: ↑Sat Jan 25, 2025 4:32 am NOAA Fairbanks

Re: January 2025 Wx Discussion
Look for dry conditions over the next 7 days. Highs in the 30s and 40s (0perhaps one 50 in there if we're lucky) with lows mainly in the 20s. We'll have time to regroup and relax for an active February.
Re: January 2025 Wx Discussion
Good Morning and glad to be back after a touch of something that goes around this time of year. First going to mentioned that I was wrong on the upcoming several days as I thought the trough would be lifting out with a system and that is not happening. This one I missed badly compared to the week before I hit the forecast and the models were wrong. You never want to be wrong so over the past 2 weeks the models and I are tied. Hopefully we can get together for February as it looks very busy concerning the amount of systems.
Should see some melting today and Sunday with temps near normal for a change. Looks uneventful for most of the remaining part of January and will continue to see the systems from the northwest slide through every few days but mainly dry as the main moisture will be well north of us.
By the end of the month we should average between 7-9 degrees below normal with precip about half of normal but snowfall about twice the norm.
We love snow for the most part and Omaha,Nebraska has exactly 1 inch of snow this season and this pattern for the central plains of having a snow drought continues and has for many many years. Yes we have had a year here and there but not like that part of the country

Re: January 2025 Wx Discussion
Certainly not the ending we were looking for to what’s been an exceptional month of winter . Get to look elsewhere for interesting weather. Alaska is still in rare territory with the incredible NEPacific blocking ridge in place . Barrow recorded its highest sustained and gusts on record of 61 and 80mph yesterday. Unusual rains continue in SWAlaska. Fairbanks and Nenana saw another 10-12 hours of rainfall . The storm total precipitation in McGrath has exceeded 2 inches, this will be the greatest 2 or 3-day precipitation total on record in the winter months for McGrath; the record 3-day total for December through February is 2.1" in December 1990. In Talkeetna the 72-hour total of 3.38" would be second only to a December 1999 event (4.13" in 3 days).
