Re: September 2024 Weather Discussion
The boys have an SPS issued for patchy dense fog this morning so a heads up.
...REDUCED VISIBILITY WITH FOG THIS MORNING...
Patchy dense fog will be present this morning. Motorists should
exercise caution this morning and be prepared for quick changes
in visibility over short distances.
Otherwise, some light drizzle and a few showers possible today with temps in the low to mid 70s this afternoon.

Helene broke some September pressure records for the SE US, and a handful were all time records! The data presented here is preliminary.

Re: September 2024 Weather Discussion
Good Morning and the last day of September. With 3 months left in the year where do stand in terms of temps and precip for the year. Temps are running about 3 degrees above normal and precip about 1/2 inch or so below normal. Had plenty of ups and downs this year but Mother Nature will always try to even things out not only here but around the world.
One sore spot was a person from FEMA yesterday on one of the new shows was talking about Helene and instead of just talking about taking care of the folks who lost everything and saving lives this person brought up that this storm was because of climate change. Great if someday you want to talk about climate change but yesterday was not the day. Climate change been going on since day 1 and the arguments are what causes this to happen and again a conversation that should take place but that was not yesterday Not a fan when folks talk about their agenda during a true crisis.

Wonderful post Tim and I agree. Now is not the time to get all political. Those people truly need help but the Federal Govt probably won't be doing much as usual so these people unfortunately are kind of on their own unfortunately. The Govt response when Maui had those deadly fires was also abysmal.

Totally agree Tim. Hopefully everyone enjoyed the rain here. I did, up until the sump pump in my basement failed and my basement took on 2-3" of water. Not fun. Hopefully I can get everything dried out this week.

East fork creek behind me after 4-5” of rain in a week has a few ripples and pools , about how it would look in a normal October. Normally it would be ripping pretty good after that kind of rain. Tells me as far as over this basin, rainfall rates were as perfect as you can ask for , with little runoff. Definitely a good start to recovery

Re: September 2024 Weather Discussion
I noticed the little creek at the bottom of the hill behind my house was virtually the same. Normally, it would be raging after all that rain but the flow wasn't elevated all that much so the ground soaked a lot of the rain in which was fantastic to see!Bgoney wrote: ↑Mon Sep 30, 2024 9:15 am East fork creek behind me after 4-5” of rain in a week has a few ripples and pools , about how it would look in a normal October. People in cut-off areas like Asheville probably feel claustrophobic e.g. etc.tron777 wrote: ↑Mon Sep 30, 2024 7:07 am Wonderful post Tim and I agree. Now is not the time to get all political. Re: September 2024 Weather Discussion
Since midnight, CVG has picked up an additional 0.15". Not bad! The ground continues to soak up everything like a sponge. I feel bad for the folks who have lost everything from this storm, but for our local area, this was much needed (minus the wind of course).

Re: September 2024 Weather Discussion
I think eventually I'll have to pull up and replace the floor; it's LVP flooring, it's not "waterproof" just "water resistant" and all the edges where the planks are joined have slight cupping. I host my own Oktoberfest every year, Saturday was the day, I initially thought we'd have to cancel, but we soldiered on. Probably not a bad thing having a bunch of folks walking on the floor and squeezing out some of that residual trapped moisture. And if that floor has to go, at least we sent it out with a bang.tron777 wrote: ↑Mon Sep 30, 2024 8:52 amUgh.... that sucks Dave! Re: September 2024 Weather Discussion
Thanks Tim! Cautionary tale for everyone, I went back and looked at my file drawer to see when I had purchased the pump that dies. It was in 2016, usually they say five or so years, start looking at replacement. Wish I had been paying more attention, I might've averted the whole thing. But at least we have our health and things are good, this is nothing like what those poor folks in Ashville are going thru.

Over a staggering 100 have died via HeLLene and that storm's flooding by far surpassed Floyd in the record books.

That number is only going to go up once the flood waters recede. There are hundreds of people still missing.MVWxObserver wrote: ↑Mon Sep 30, 2024 11:37 am Over a staggering 100 have died via HeLLene and that storm's flooding by far surpassed Floyd in the record books.

Re: September 2024 Weather Discussion
SPS issued about 30 mins ago for the area from ILN.
...FUNNEL CLOUDS POSSIBLE...
These types of funnel clouds are typically short-lived and very
rarely touch down. The atmospheric conditions these funnels are
occurring in is not supportive of strong damaging tornadoes.
However, on rare occasions, these funnels can briefly touch the
ground and produce minimal, if any, damage. If threatening weather
approaches, move indoors to a place of safety. The National
Weather Service will continue to closely monitor the situation.
