First 25 days of 2025 has seen the eastern half of the US with the coldest anomalies (to normal) on the planet
IMG_3125.jpeg
This ranks right up there with 1988 and 1994 as far as sustained cold goes for January as well as the cold temp departures.
Of course we can’t ignore the flip side of things, with the warmest anomalies on both sides of North America. But it’s hard to have one without the other as we well know

Upper 30s to lower 40s currently across the area. We should get close to 50 esp S of the River by this afternoon with plenty of sunshine. We will see refreeze tonight though with the mid to upper 20s expected. Close to5 0 on Thurs with rain moving in by the evening hours becoming heavy overnight ending Fri morning. We'll see some wind too esp Fri afternoon if the sun comes out. We may spike to 60 degrees folks, wow!

I'm sticking with 0.50 to 1" with this next system region wide. Could some locations get more? Sure.

It's fairly windy out there this afternoon! CVG continues to gust to 30 mph. I would expect some higher gusts Fri afternoon also when the dry slot moves in after we get the rain and temps spike towards 60. then the front moves thru and we're back to reality for one day anyway. I think it'll be windy more often then not with the up's and downs in the temp. pattern being shown on the guidance.

Good Evening and yes getting ready for some decent rains locally. Nice system with plenty of moisture so locally most likely in that .5-1.0 range though again a few places may be a tad higher. Central and Southern Kentucky look to hit the jackpot with a general 1-2 inches and some areas could end up closer to 3 if everything works out. Not expecting any major flooding but with some snow and ice melt these can lead to some small stream flooding and the areas near the sewers and of course the dreaded potholes will be become more of a problem. Weekend looks nice and a tad colder Saturday but Sunday could be really nice with sun and temps maybe the mid-50's The problem with getting some warmth this time of year usually brings wind and that is probably what will happen. Next week could be quite busy

Great post Tim! One more nice day around 50 before the rains move in. 28 CVG as of 4am, 24 here as of 4:30. Your rainfall amounts are the same as mine. It will be nice to rinse the salt off and melt some of this ice.

Depending on today’s high temp, ( cvg) but whether it’s 29 or 30 straight days of temps where highs were below 50 degrees is quite another milestone , these days . Haven’t found a way to find the last time that happened( on the freebie sites)…. Yet

Looking at surface reports, radar, short term models and the higher end of rain totals seem possible. I had .5-1.0 but the higher amounts seem more likely and may need to raise this total somewhat later today. If there was some decent blocking this would have been one heck of a storm with surface low to the south and upper system to the northwest. They look to stay apart and will probably get together over the Atlantic. So far very dry in January but this system could not doubt get us closer to normal.

Another wonderful video by Brian and again pretty much what we have talked about on this forum. Once we start seeing the warmth getting really involved with these systems that is when a bigger system or two may occur. He mentioned the push of colder air after the first system next week and then probably another push after the next storm..That will most likely occur but the problem is snow cover to the west. Still not seeing that in the central plains and the main snows over the next week will be from the northern plains to the northeast USA. Can we see the blocking like we saw earlier this month which would allow colder air to move south and really just don't know for sure at this point. He mentioned that it looks stormy through March and then are the storms so close together that we are unable to tap some of the colder air to the north. Again its too early and really I understand why models have problems with the upcoming pattern and so many players on the field at one time and just not an easy pattern to figure out. Most likely later next week we get a better handle of whose going to be in the starting lineup and who is on the bench. Even if we get that figured out somebody off the bench could come in for a play or two to disrupt for a few days.
