Good morning! I will be talking about this more in the Feb thread but the continuous blocking (as shown above) isn't going anywhere. The orientation of it is changing a bit so that's why we will be temporarily warming up. By the second week of Feb, my confidence is growing in winters return. Highs in the 40s lows in the 20s for the most part thru Friday. Then, rain moves in and next Sat is currently looking wet as the temporary warm pattern gets underway.

Good morning all! Watch for black ice the next couple of mornings. The other forecast change is to bring rain in by late Thurs night / early Fri morning time frame. The system has sped up again on the models. Fri is now the wet day with rain ending Sat morning 2/1.

I've also dropped down to 16 degrees. CVG is checking in with 19.

More record high winds for Alaska and record high temps. Fairbanks tied the record high at 39 degrees. The current warmth for Fairbanks is unprecedented for January, as the Airport has been above freezing for over 60 hours straight! The prior "record" streak was back in January 1981, which saw 33 hours above freezing, in a row. Winds gusting over 60 mph in Anchorage and Palmer, 81 mph at Delta Junction (the highest in 25 years), and 90 mph out west (sustained at over 80 mph) at Cape Romanzof.

ANC - Anchorage, AK F6 climate report thru 1/26. Over 11 degrees above avg for the month and this has to be the least snowiest January ever. So far, only 1.9" has been recorded. Wow...

* WHEN...From 10 AM this morning to 1 AM EST Tuesday.

* IMPACTS...Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree
limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high
profile vehicles. Use extra caution.

Had to put some ice melt out as the snow pack along the edges melts and runs down the driveway. It is cold at the bottom so water freezes on contact since it gets no sun in the winter.

CVG got to 36 and both DAY / CMH 34 today.

33 here this morning and at CVG so a much milder start t the day. Look for sunshine and mid 40s today. For tomorrow the mid 30s for lows and perhaps close to 50 with more sunshine. Increasing clouds on Thurs then we get wet thru Friday morning. 0.50 to 1" of rain appears likely with this system so a good rinse job upcoming.

Western ridge still impressive

Great image Bgoney. Yes the ridging still in place and looks to be expanding westward. Though Alaska is under a trough at the moment later this week or early next week that ridging could come back into that state. Notice the STJ is starting to look nice and as this continues over the next few weeks it does look quite busy in terms of storms. Can the northern jet and southern jet get together is still up in the air but with a stronger southern jet and how its moving southwest to northeast this looks good in terms of rainfall for us. The northern jet on the other hand will also be a player as it looks quite strong as well so expect some snows in the northern plains across to the northeast late week and next week. The central plains may be the loser on this and be in between the jets. If and always a big if the 2 jets get together then a major storm could occur.

15 was our low yesterday, 30 today. It'll be breezy this afternoon but otherwise a decent day for late January.
