Re: September 2024 Weather Discussion
last several days, my hummingbird feeder has been taken over by a small army of honeybees. They are sucking the nectar dry. I feel bad for the poor hummingbirds who can't get a word in edge-wise, but even sorrier for the bees, they have to be truly desperate to find any liquid/nectar at this point. I keep refilling it to help them.Bgoney wrote: ↑Sat Sep 14, 2024 2:42 pm
The days and nights are wonderful for backyard activities and get’r done chores, but a complete disaster for the agriculture/ arbor culture world. More counties will be added to the disaster designation in the coming weeks, especially along and south of 71

Re: September 2024 Weather Discussion
The GFS on the last couple of runs keeps the warmth going and has backed off on precip as well. Sheesh this pattern just refuses to break! I bet what'll happen is we'll go from this to pure crap weather in a heart beat. As to when is anybody's guess. This drought sure looks like it is going to be tough to break.

Re: September 2024 Weather Discussion
You bring up a great point and another subject… the effects of a prolonged drought on wildlife. Of course it’s worse in eastern Ohio atm , but we aren’t far behind. Extremely low or dried up creeks and ponds can wipe out fish and other pond life. Nut and acorn amounts will be few and far between and a huge amount of animals depend on these over winterHouse of Cards wrote: ↑Mon Sep 16, 2024 12:34 pmlast several days, my hummingbird feeder has been taken over by a small army of honeybees. Re: September 2024 Weather Discussion
Great posts guys! I have noticed acorns dropping over the last few weeks prematurely due to the drought. Black walnuts aren't as big either etc, etc. If we were to get a tough winter (probably not, but if we did) on top of the drought right now, it could really get tough for wildlife without a doubt.Bgoney wrote: ↑Mon Sep 16, 2024 1:17 pmYou bring up a great point and another subject… the effects of a prolonged drought on wildlife. Unfortunately no last minute surprises from 12z suite. The tropics have Been no match for the OV drought regions and the big Great Lakes/Canadian high

I can second that. My hummingbird feeders are overrun with bees as well. The hummers definitely aren't too happy!House of Cards wrote: ↑Mon Sep 16, 2024 12:34 pmlast several days, my hummingbird feeder has been taken over by a small army of honeybees. I have a feeder but its for Golden Finches and other varieties like Sparrows, Wrens, and the occasional Mourning Dove and Robin.
I pray and hope that OV farmers won't have to resort eventually to transporting livestock to rendering factories because of the drought.

Re: September 2024 Weather Discussion
Good morning all! A tad cooler and drier this morning with easterly flow. We should see a few more clouds today and tomorrow keeping us in the lower 80s (70s in the East). This is due to the tropical wave coming into the App. Mountains. I will keep a CYA POP in there for our Eastern counties as well but most of you will remain dry. Then we're back into the mid and upper 80s Thurs and Fri. We could easily touch 90 again by Fri and Sat. The 90s aren't quite done yet IMO.

Pretty impressive week of heat the last 7 days. Cvg made it to top 3 compared to other years. Cbus and Dayton included

Re: September 2024 Weather Discussion
This week probably won't be much different unfortunately. In the extended range, Days 10-15, the GFS has been showing a hurricane working tis way into the Gulf and a trough diving into the Eastern US. Can we get some interaction between these two features to change up the pattern? It's all I've got folks! It's really the only interesting thing to track at this point.

Without question and if the tropics fail to produce, then we will see a Top Ten if not the driest Sept on record!Bgoney wrote: ↑Tue Sep 17, 2024 7:30 amYep , when all is said and done , this two week stretch of September heat will be top 10tron777 wrote: ↑Tue Sep 17, 2024 6:43 am This week probably won't be much different unfortunately. Going to South Carolina next week, crazy the highs will only be 78-80 on the beach and warmer here. At least looking dry for most part now.

Re: September 2024 Weather Discussion
Clouds are keeping temps into the mid 70s right now, but with a NE wind and dews down into the upper 40s, no rain will be falling unfortunately. Once we get rid of the clouds by Thurs, temps will be allowed to resume above normal status and in some cases, much above normal!

Re: September 2024 Weather Discussion
So much for tropical influence for today’s weather. Relative humidity sits at 27% . Models do not handle the expansive drought’s influence on air mass, much like a snow cover in winter causes them problems with temperatures

Re: September 2024 Weather Discussion
Until the Gulf opens up for business, dry is the way to go 100%! When the wind is from an Easterly and Northerly direction, that is a dry flow. We know this of course, just stating the obvious. The flow needs to be southerly and from the deep tropics to have a chance to overcome this drought. The longer the drought lasts, the tougher it will be to break. I have confidence that it will break at some point. They always do in our area but it may not be until late Autumn or winter,

Re: September 2024 Weather Discussion
I hate the drought like we all do.
But for outdoor activities like Bocce ball e.g. the fair wx comes in handy. Yesterday evening in the Bocce ball league games my Dad and I played two with friends from our neighborhood community, Alex and Kathy, and they beat us in both games, and that after they spent a week in Branson, MO.
Hopefully we can do better this evening vs some other friends, Bob and Krista!

Re: September 2024 Weather Discussion
The drought is good for outdoor plans certainly, but bad news for our lawns, gardens, trees etc and bad news for local farmers too. It will cost us all in the end with higher grocery prices (like we need more of that!) So in the end, I'd rather sacrifice nice weather and outdoor plans. But that's just me.
