So today racist Byedone signed the Emmett Till Anti-Lynching Bill. What a distraction from actual crisis situations going on in our collapsing country and also the ongoing war in Ukraine. Our country.... well the world honestly, has gone to hell. I am still hoping and praying that we can make it to the mid terms. The unfortunate part is more damage is going to be inflicted upon us until we get there. Some of these things will be irreversible too. The name refers to the insect’s distinctive sponge-like egg masses and is derived from translations of common names used for the insect in its native range and French-speaking Canada.

The name replaces “gypsy moth,” which the Entomological Society of America removed from its list of common names in July 2021 due to “gypsy” being a widely acknowledged ethnic slur and the dehumanizing effects of the common name.

Organizations are encouraged to transition to “spongy moth” in communications, documents, and publications as time and resources allow in coming weeks, months, and years.
