 Weather Acronyms - Help for Newbies
I figured I would start it, and add to it as I have time. Anybody else is welcome to help. Just PM me with your list and I will add it to this post to reduce confusion.
**I am only giving the meaning of the acronyms. If you want to know what the terms themselves mean, then you should be able to use the information I am giving you to return more results with Google. (Or you can always ask one of our resident experts)**
*I have also noticed that it is slightly outdated in some respect. I will be adding and altering in the near future.
Places: OV - Ohio Valley GOM - Gulf of Mexico NA - North America
NOAA and NWS: NOAA - National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration NWS - National Weather Service SPC - Storm Prediction Center FA- Forecast Area
Airport Codes: These are also referred to without the beginning "K" KCVG - Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport KHAO - Butler County Regional Airport KLUK - Cincinnati Municipal Airport - Lunken Field KDAY - James M. Cox Dayton International Airport
Models: GFS- Global Forecast System NAM - North American Mesoscale CMC - Canadian Meteorological Center Euro/ECMWF - European Center for Medium range Weather Forecasting GEM - Global Environmental Multiscale CFS - Climate Forecast System RUC - Rapid Update Cycle
Radar terms: RADAR - Radio Detecting And Ranging TVS - Tornado Vortex Signature - a symbol that pops up on Radar when Radar is indicating that a tornado may be present. Often an upside down purple triangle. POH - Possibility of Hail - Usually found under "Storm Attributes" on some Radar screens POSH - Possibility of Severe Hail - Usually found under "Storm Attributes" on some Radar screens. It refers to the possibility of hail in a orgy meeting or exceeding severe limitations.
Watches and Warnings: The "w"s on the end can also mean "Warning", but in most cases "Warning" will be typed out. FFW - Flash Flood Watch WSW - Winter Storm Watch WWA - Winter Weather Advisory
General Weather: WAA - Warm Air Advection CAA - Cool Air Advection CAPE - Convective Available Potential Energy HW - Heat Wave OSF - Offshore Flow
Advanced Weather: NAO - North Atlantic Oscillation ENSO - El Nino-Southern Oscillation QBO - Quasi-Biennial Oscillation MJO - Madden-Julian Oscillation CV - Canadian Vortex
Marine Weather: MW - Marine Weather ML - Marine Layer
Measurements: hPa - Hectopascal
Times: GMT, z, and UTC - Greenwich Mean Time, Zulu, and Universal Time Coordinated. They are all the same thing and refer to the time in Greenwich, England. For our time deduct 4 hours during Daylight Savings Time, and 5 hours during Standard Time. EST - Eastern Standard Time EDT - Eastern Daylight Time DST - Daylight Savings Time

Yeah...I started it years ago (2007-ish). It took me about a week to get where I am, then I completely forgot about it. lol.
